Local Grandparents Rap on the TV!

Posted By: James Cormier · 5/11/2012 10:22:00 AM

So my kids were watching a new show on YTV called Zoink'd.  It's like a Gong Show/Canada's Got Talent thing where youngsters actually judge older people's talent.  For every kid who pulls the lever, the person gets sprayed with something.  It's fun for the kids. Anyway, these two people in their late 70's come out and start rapping, We then discover they are from Truro.  James & Evelyn Ripley were put up to it by their grandson Brendan.  It's about 13 minutes into the show, and the host absolutely brutalizes the word 'Truro'.  Good on the Ripley's for having the gumption to do this.  Take a look!

Beastie Boys Legacy

Posted By: James Cormier · 5/4/2012 3:56:00 PM

We've just got word the Adam Yauch, MCA, of the Beastie Boys has passed away at the age of 48.  Usually, at this time, all us media types try to gauge his impact on the world of music.  I will do that.  But I think first, we should remember that this was a man with a family, trying his best at what he loved for who he loved.  The world lost a Beastie Boy, but his bandmates lost a friend, and his family lost one of their own.  So raise your glass to the man.

But on to the music.  Adam, Adam, & Mike helped shape modern hip-hop, and lots of modern rock, as well.  They had so many samples in their tunes, I still think people are suing them for Paul's Boutique.  You think of the rap/rock, and rap/metal back in the 90's and 2000s... well that can be ...

I Miss Videos (Eat Them Up, Yum)

Posted By: James Cormier · 4/27/2012 10:45:00 AM

Hey gang.

I miss videos.  Yes, they still get played on the channels. But, back in the day, MTV and MuchMusic did it wall-to-wall.  To fill all that time, they played lots of videos. So, if it wasn't a hit song, or if it wasn't done by a huge star, it could still get played if they video was interesting.  Would Herbie Hancock's song 'Rock It' been as big of a hit if it wasn't for the video? Probably not.  There are countless examples of just that.  But I think one of the songs and bands that took advantage of this new media was Barnes & Barnes and their weird, yet funny, song and video 'Fish Heads'.  It was directed by actor Bill Paxton before he was famous, and he even starred in the video as the guy at the start who actual buys the fish head.  I did not ...

Singing Show Frenzy

Posted By: James Cormier · 4/20/2012 1:50:00 PM

Hey Gang,

I'm not a big fan of the singing/talent shows, though I've been liking The Voice most out of all of them.  I've been watching that, and Idol with my wife & daughter.  It's fun.  I don't think many stars will come out of either show. You think of Idol's 10 seasons before, only a handful are stars, and another handful are actually making enough money to make a living at it. But these shows are not to make stars, no matter what the producers say. It's about attracting viewers. It's a TV show. No eyeballs, no commercials, no money. No TV show.  Anyway, people get a little too invested in the show.

Sure, my family & I have strong opinions on who should go, or who should stay, but I like to think we don't go overboard. Many people do. Last night, a young fella by the name of Colton was kicked off.  People were shocked. Shocked I tell ...
